Measures Introduced To Improve Yukon Nominee Program

Whitehorse — The Department of Education is introducing changes to the Yukon Nominee Program that will provide greater flexibility to respond to infractions.

The new measures will increase the maximum length of bans from the program from three to five years.

Names of employers who are banned from the program will also be published online.

“The vast majority of employers who participate in the nominee program comply with the rules,” Minister of Education Doug Graham said.

“These new measures will directly affect only those few employers who abuse the program.”

The increased ban length provides greater flexibility to respond to more serious infractions and repeat offenders.

In the past, names of offenders were not publicly disclosed by the Government of Yukon.

Effective this month, bans put in place after September 1 will be published on the Department of Education’s website.

The Yukon Nominee Program is an economic immigration program designed to help meet the labour market needs of Yukon employers, while ensuring that every effort is made to hire Yukoners and Canadians first.

The program gives qualified foreign nationals the opportunity to work and settle in Yukon with the long-term goal of establishing themselves as permanent residents of Canada.
