BC First Nations Chiefs to Express Support for the Eagle Spirit Energy Oil Pipeline Project

BC First Nations Chiefs to Express Support for the Eagle Spirit Energy Oil Pipeline Project in Northern British Columbia Representing North Central BC, Chief Dan George, Ts’il Kaz Koh First Nation (Burns Lake Indian Band), Chief Archie Patrick, Stellat’en First Nation, and Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs Larry Marsden (Gitsegukla) and Art Mathews (Gitwangak), will host a News Conference to articulate the guiding principles for resource and other developments in their nation’s traditional territories.

The Chiefs will express their support for the Eagle Spirit Energy Oil Pipeline Project through Northern BC. The Supreme Court of Canada decision in the Tsilhoqut’in case in 2014 confirmed that First Nations in British Columbia have ownership of their traditional territories. Since the Supreme Court decision, many BC First Nations have developed principles governing how resource and other projects can proceed in their traditional territories.

Last year, Eagle Spirit Energy Holdings Ltd. announced it was proceeding with a First Nations-led alternative to the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline. Eagle Spirit Energy executives have spent the last year consulting with and securing support from First Nations along the proposed pipeline route. Representing the many Elected and Hereditary Chiefs who have signed on in support of this project, the following will be available to speak to their Nation’s views.
